Morning Session:
  • Introductions - What brings you to this seminar?
  • Keynote Rescuers, Perpetrators & Bystanders - Carol & Sam Edelman, co-directors, The Center for Excellence on the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, Human Rights, and Tolerance
  • Lessons Learned – Liz Igra – Central Valley HEN


Afternoon Session: (Start at 1:00)
  • Overview of Web 2.0 technology tools (blogs, wikis, VoiceThreads, short movies)
  • Student Showcase - Pam Bodnar’s students from previous project sharing impact of their Multimedia project - “Change Writers” collaborative video projects
  • Gerda Weissmann Klein & Teaching for Tolerance & Erin Goldman’s Beyond Anne Frank .
  • Sharing of Commanding Officer - Charlotte Delbo
  • Closing - Reiko’s story &  Heroes in the Hallway - Prompt & reflective writing - using blog
DAY 2
Morning Session:
  • Propaganda & Media Literacy  - Tosha Tillotson, USHMM/CVHEN
  • Don’t Fence Me In- from Internment to Dachau  – Christine Umeda
  • Journey to Camp Jerome - Marielle Tsukamoto


Afternoon Session:
  • “Daruma Dolls” resilience activity – Marielle Tsukamoto
  • Introduction Time of Remembrance, Densho, USHMM, and Memorial Library websites.
DAY 3
Morning Session
  • Prep for Day 4 - Select a piece from Prism (poem), Still I Rise, Catastrophe Tales, Executive Order 9066 (Dwight Okita), Storming the Tulips (poems), Jay’s poem - for shared poetry read-around activity.


Afternoon Session:
  • Cultural Event: Chico – Congregation Beth Israel for lunch, visit, & Klezmer music; Davis -  Cultural lunch.
DAY 4
Morning Session
  • Common Core State Standards - Discussion: Think about how you might address Common Core Standards, based on your current teaching assignment and what you’ve experienced over the past 3 days.
  • Stereotyping  Activity - Pam Bodnar - How could you adapt this activity to your teaching situation?  What Common Core Standards would it align to?
  • Sharing of Jay Frankston’s artifacts (books, sculptures, paintings and poetry)


Afternoon Session
  • Readings - Seedfolks and more. Group discussion.
  • Move on to shared poetry read-around and share reflections from Prism (poem), Still I Rise, Catastrophe Tales, Executive Order 9066 (Dwight Okita), Storming the Tulips (poems), Jay’s poem.
  • Group Discussion & Planning: Start thinking about what you can implement over the course of the next school year - by May for our follow-up session. What are some of your initial ideas for a lesson? What works best for you and your teaching assignment? Teaming? Collaborating? Individual?
  • Group work time – Participants create individual and/or collaborative vision plans, share visions, ideas, resources and possible collaborations
DAY 5
Open with a shared breakfast - ala Memorial Library style
  • Discussion: Where are you today as compared to Monday morning (8:30-9:00)
  • Storming the Tulips – Hannie Ostendorf Voyles, Holocaust Witness & Survivor
  • Hannie’s “I Am From...” poem - student reading
  • Hannie’s book reflections
  • Participants will share their journeys and plans for incorporating social justice into their curriculum.
  • Closing Statements on Sharing of Impressions and Visions – Mark and Carole, from The  Memorial Library, will address future options and ‘next steps.’
Saturday, May 5,2012 (1/2 day) - 8:30- 12:00
      Participants come together to share their “crossing lines” lesson.
